My son, Ronan, and I dined at one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in our area – Hong Ahn Palace – tonight after his tennis lesson! He wanted to buy my dinner since it’s my birthday week. Woohoo! He’s only 13 years old, so it was a great moment to teach him all about paying the bill and tipping. He got a little carried away since he loves the place so much and tipped our wonderful waitress who is quick to smile $20 on a $43 bill. At this rate he will be broke by 20 years old!
Anyway, Hong Ahn has a nice menu full of Chinese classics. Please see below…

We have tried many items from the menu thus far. Our favorites (and what we ordered tonight) are crab rangoon, steamed dumplings, Orange Chicken for Ronan, and Generals Chicken for me. Hands down, THE BEST! Bring your appetite because everything is on a large scale!
The crab rangoon are fried puffs of cream cheese goodness! I love to dip mine in a mixture of sweet and sour with a touch of hot mustard. You can definitely taste the crab, but can we just get back to the cream cheese please? They are bursting with flavor and you get a large portion of 6!
As for the steamed dumplings, they aren’t your typical flat, mushy dumplings that you find in a lot of Asian restaurants. Here you get 6 large, thick homemade dumplings that are filled with a meat mixture and served with a chive dipping sauce. I suggest calling ahead to order these, unless you don’t mind waiting the 25 minutes it takes to prepare them.

I can’t stress enough how great the food and service is here! I’ve been to many Chinese restaurants over the years and nothing – except for a dim sum restaurant in Toronto – compares. If you are ever in the Mequon, WI area please stop at Hong Ahn Palace. You will be sure to be properly taken care of by the gracious owner and his staff. Best of all, you will have enough for tomorrow night’s dinner!
